Finally, it’s spring! Which means it’s time for spring cleaning.
So go ahead and roll up your sleeves, open up the windows, and get to work with this list of spring cleaning tips.
HOW TO SPRING CLEAN YOUR HOME
1. START WITH A LIST
Coming up with a list is a great way to prioritize where you want to spend your time and energy spring cleaning. Take a look at rooms and areas that you usually ignore. You probably already regularly wash your kitchen floor and toilets. But what about the linen closets? And when was the last time your kids went through their closets to see what doesn’t fit anymore? A list will help everyone prioritize and stay on track during your spring cleaning session.
2. WORK YOUR WAY DOWN
Keep in mind that dust falls, so always work top to bottom when you’re cleaning. Dust and wash ceilings and ceiling fans first, followed by your furniture, before you vacuum the carpet. That way you won’t completely undo all of your hard work by vacuuming first and then unleashing a fury of dust onto your carpet.
3. GET RID OF CLUTTER
The whole family can get involved in decluttering. Have your kids go through their rooms separating things into three boxes: keep, trash, or donate/sell. Older kids should be able to handle this on their own. Younger kids will need some guidance.
Once you have the kids decluttering, tackle your own closets and drawers using the same keep, trash, donate method. There’s nothing quite like the satisfaction of having an organized closet or a clean junk drawer!
4. WASH YOUR WALLS
Walls get covered in dust and dirt. We just usually don’t notice (or pay attention). During spring cleaning, use a damp towel to wipe down walls and blinds. Remember to start from the top and work your way down to the bottom.

5. DEEP CLEAN YOUR KITCHEN
When you’re spring cleaning, ignore all the things you usually clean in your kitchen and focus instead on places that need some attention, like your cabinets and pantry. Go through and see what cans or boxes are expired so you can get rid of them. Wipe down your cabinets and their shelves. Make sure to also clean out the refrigerator while you’re at it.
6. WASH YOUR SHOWER CURTAIN AND LINER
Most people forget about their plastic or vinyl shower curtain and liner, or don’t realize they can be washed. To wash them, simply put them in your washing machine, along with a few towels. Add detergent. When it’s done, hang it to dry.
7. DUST OFF YOUR BOOKSHELVES
Dust loves to cling to books, so if you have a bookshelf (or several) but aren’t a regular duster, then now is your time to shine. Take all of your books off their bookshelves and dust the shelves and the books. Then, reorganize your books however you want! This can be a fun and easy project for your kids to help you with.
These tips and projects can help you get started on your spring cleaning task list so your home can be free of clutter and more enjoyable to use.
